1 Dec Suvla Capt Carruthers with 2nd Lt Spankie and 2nd Lt Warner and 100 NCOs and men took over from Hampshire Regt a detached post at C51 and C50. Capt Hawes with Lt Ridley and 60 NCOs and men took over from the Hampshire Regt a detached post at Dublin Castle. Lt Byrne and 25 NCOs and men took over from the Hampshire Regt a support post at Well 45B. 1 NCO and 12 men took over from the Hampshire Regt a support post at the junction of CA and CB. The rest of the Battalion remined at Hill 10 and continued improving the communication trenches.
2 Dec Suvla Strength 16 officers and 469 other ranks. A fine frosty day. The men are recovering. A draft of 3 officers , 2nd Lt G B Hallom of 5th Middlesex Regt, 2nd Lt G R S Durward of 14 R. Scots , 2nd Lt C J Greenlees of 9th Queens and 168 NCOs and men joined and were taken on the strength. The trenches at Hill 10 were cleared and improved. And work was continued in the firing line. Hill 10 was heavily shelled between 5 and 5.30pm. 2nd Lt Pearson rejoined from sick leave. Wounded 16912 Private P Drew of Y Coy.
3 Dec Suvla The post at C51 and C50 was relieved by the Lancashire Fusiliers, and we relieved the other posts taken over on 1st Dec 1915. A misty day with light rain in the morning. 2 officers, 2nd Lt J Trotter of 4th HLI and 2nd Lt T W R Neill and 25 NCOs and men joined and were taken on the strength. Work was continued at Hill 10 improving communication trenches and pumping out the front line. Killed 21771 Private J O'connor. Wounded 17683 Private P Mc Hugh and 11469 Private M Murphy.
4 Dec Suvla 2nd Lt Scott of 7th R S Fusiliers and 2nd Lt J W Robertson of 8th R S Fusiliers with 56 NCOs and men joined and were taken on strength. Lt Jacob continued to hold Post no 2, the trenches being thigh deep in mud and water after the thaw of yesterday. During the continuous shelling of Hill 10 Capt de Wolf and 5421 Sgt Clarke were wounded, the latter seriously. 24 men went to hospital (exposure).
5 Dec Suvla Capt C E Hawes with 3 oficers and 123 other ranks relieved the Royal Lancashire Fusiliers, commanded by Capt Yates at Post no 1. Very little firing. Turks are busy clearing their front line of trenches. Lt Jacobs was relieved by 2nd Royal Fusiliers at Post no 2. The remainder of the battalion were placed at the disposal of CRE for completing the second line of defence on Hill 10. Casualties 10020 Private Keith, killed. To hospital 21 (exposure). A draft of 180 NCOs and men arrived.
6 Dec Suvla We continue to hold Post no 1, the men being employed in collecting equipment, rifles, and blankets from the support trenches and evacuating them to the beach. We sent out patrols by night and found our wire intact. Continued with work on second line. Casualties, 10353 Private Masterson was wounded. To hospital 3. W Coy to bivouac in Reserve Nullah.
7 Dec Suvla We continue to hold Post no 1, the men being employed in building Flood Post on parodos to hold about 20 men each, which men will occupy if we have another flood. Casualties, nil. To hospital 21 (exposure) and unfit of previous drafts.
8 Dec Suvla Lt Ridley with Z Coy relieved Capt C E Hawes. The trenches were greatly improved We are now holding 700 ft of trench with 6 guards of 6 men each. The remainer of the company being employed in building up the parapet and fire step. Turkish deserter surrendered to the first sentry group on our right Cheshire Regt. At 5.30 artillery and machine gun bombardment. Turks are supposed to be relieving their front line. Work continued on second line of defences. Casualties, nil. To hospital 13
9 Dec Suvla We continued to hold no 1 Post. Everything quiet in front line. Work continued on second line of defence. Hill 10 was shelled rather badly around noon. Casualties 10962 Private G Howes killed. Wounded 10955 Private E Finlay, 21934 Private G Lost. To hospital 6.
10 Dec Suvla We continued to hold no 1 Post and have established communication with Royal Fusiliers to our left. Very little sniping. Y Coy moves to Reserve Nullah. 22995 Private P Doherty killed. by shell fire. Work continued on second line of defence. 7 men to hospital
11 Dec Suvla We continued to hold Post no 1. Lt Jacobs with X Company moved up to the firing line, taking over two posts held by 2nd Royal Fusiliers, having the remainder of his men in close support. Very little sniping. Heavy shelling at Hill 10. Work continues on second line of defence. Casualties nil. To hospital 7
12 Dec Suvla. Lt Spanky with W Coy relieved Y Coy at Post no 1. Battalion HQ and relieved company moved to Reserve Nullah. Work continues on second line of defence. Casualties nil. Hill 10 heavily bombarded.
13 Dec Suvla. X and W Companies were relieved by the Hampshire Regiment, and moved to the reserve nullah. Orders were received that we will evacuate tomorrow. We continue to supply fatigues for the second line of defence. Hill 10 bombarded. Casualties nil.
14 Dec Suvla. The battalion left the Reserve Nullah at 19.10 o'clock and embarked on HMT Hazel about midnight and arrived at Mudros the next day.
15 Dec Mudros . In Mudros Harbour on HMT Hazel. At 1730 we left for Helles, and arrived at Helles about midnight and marched to bivouacs at the old French HQ. Brigade describes these as bad and dirty bivouaks on the E Kuthia Road.
16 Dec Helles. Spent day in clearing and improving lines. We had several big shells in our lines. Casualties nil. Capt Wilson, 1sr Royal Munster acting as Brigadier.
17 Dec Helles. Battalion moved into 2/8 Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regt) lines above X Beach. Casualties nil. To hospital 3.
18 Dec Helles. Battalion moved to 1st Royal Marine lines. Casualties nil.
19 Dec Helles. The Battalion was employed in cleaning up 1st Royal Marine lines. Officers commanding companies were ordered to reconnoitre firing line held by 4th Royal Scots, 7th Royal Scots and 7th Scottish Rifles. Casualties nil.
20 Dec Helles. Continued clearing 1st Royal Marine lines. Casualties nil.
21 Dec Helles. We are under orders of the 87th Brigade. The Battalion moved up to the firing line at 7.30am to relieve the 4th Royal Scots, 7th Royal Scots and 7th Scottish Rifles. The relief being completed by noon. Strength (effective) 570. Length of trench (parapet) 310ft including 4 grenades. Post within 30ft of Turks. The relieved regements removed all over head cover. Heavy rifle fire spread along whole line at about 18.00. Our support and reserve trench were shelled continuously throughout the night.
22 Dec Helles. Severe rain storm during the night 21/22 Dec resulting in trenches soon being 2 to 3 feet deep in mud and water. Oor front and communication trenches shelled intermittently during the night and throughout the day. Just before day light Turks bombed us out of 2 ? in Z company lines and about 30ft of trench, but were at once driven out again bya bombing party under Lt H L Ridley (commanding Z company) Casualties 12 other ranks killed and 18 wounded. Enemy 20 dead bodies either brought in or seen in No Mans Land, unknown number of wounded. Major H Nelson ( 1st Border Regt) arrived and took over comand of Battalion.
23 Dec Helles Battalion relieved by KOSB. Trenches in very bad state of mud and water. And relief slow work in consequence. Relief completed at 20.30 and Battalion settled into RND dugouts in reserve.Battalion reoins 86th Brigade.
