26612 Private John Aloysius Doyle 10th Battalion. Born Dublin. Residence Dublin. Formerly 1818, S. Ir. Horse. Died of wounds 21 Oct 1916. John Doyle was the son of Elizabeth and Martin Doyle, of 63 Upper Dorset Street in Dublin. At Belvedere, he always known as ‘Jack’. He was a bright scholar: an ‘Exhibitioner’ in the Intermediate Examination (the forerunner of the Junior Cert). In his final year at Belvedere, 1912, he passed the Middle Grade Exams with Honours and also the Matriculation, which was the entrance exam for the universities. He also passed a Civil Service Clerkship examination, without any preparation. He was appointed to the Land Commission Office. After passing a further exam, he was promoted to the London Office of the Board of Trade. He then joined the army, refusing to seek a commission. Indeed, he refused all offers of promotion, as he preferred to remain a private with the responsibility of no other men’s lives on his hands. He was first attached to the South Irish Horse. Later, as foot-soldiers became more in demand than those on horseback, he was transferred (as Private #26612) to the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. Having joined the 10thBattalion of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers, he was sent to France. Here he was engaged constantly in action at the front. On 17 October 1916, he had been engaged in six days’ fighting and was leaving the front for a respite, when he was hit by the splinters of a German shell. The 1917 Belvederian describes his last days: He was taken back to the base hospital, where, on examination, it was found that his condition was extremely serious. He found it hard to believe that he was dying, but was perfectly resigned to his fate. The chaplain attended himconstantly during the four days of life that remained, and gave him Holy Communion on the day before his death. He writes with admiration of his patience and his piety and of his holy death. Among his comrades he was liked for his gentle and unassuming ways, and he was spoken of by his company commander as a “brave lad, who did his work nobly and well.” His civil superiors at the Board of Trade Office in writing to his mother [who was a widow at this time] express their regret at losing so efficient an employee, and their appreciation of his good qualities while he was with them. He was only in his twenty-first year when he died, and while we cannot think without regret of such a promising life thus cut short, we cannot at the same time ail to rejoice in the fact that he died nobly and holily a death such as he would have chosen. R I.P. Jack Doyle died on Saturday 21 October 1916 at the age of 20. He is buried at grave VD 32 in Puchevilliers British Cemetery at the Somme in France
