Information that has been sent to the GWF Team email account by a former pupil of Henry Letchworth - H M Letchworth was a much loved teacher at Chafyn Grove School, Salisbury for many years. He taught my father and both my uncles in the 1920s, and me and three of my cousins in the 1950s. We thought of him as pretty old when I was there (1949-1954). He ran the Scout Troop having been, I believe, a friend of Baden Powell at Youlbury. He coached the rugby team. His nickname was Slush (which he did not like), except at the annual Scout Camp, when he was known as Chippi (the older nickname which he preferred and which may, for all I know, have dated back to the war). He produced the annual school play, and acted as Deputy Headmaster, taking turns with the Headmaster to preach the sermon in chapel on Sundays. I didn't know that he had served in the First World War but, with hindsight, it would have been surprising if he had not. He was a kindly old man, but I had the impression he became a little disillusioned, if not actually embittered, towards the end of his teaching career. I think he never married, and I don't know when he died.
