1 Sept Suvla Bay Improved trenches. Started sapping out towards forward trench being dug by 6th Munsters. Buried several bodies in front of our lines. Many others still lying about. Several rifles and sets of equipment brought in. Casualties: Hospital 2

2 Sept Suvla Bay Improvement carried out in trenches. Water very troublesome in places. 2nd Lt Gilmour returned froim officers rest camp on Imbros. Casualties: Wounded 1, Hospital 1.

3 Sept Suvla Bay Fighting strength 6 officers and 355 men. Casualties: Wounded 2, Hospital 1

4 Sept Suvla Bay Battalion relieved at 22.30 by Bucks Yeomanry and moved via Chocolate Hill to reserve 6th Inniskilling Fusilier trenches near Ali Bay Chesme. Casualties: Hospital 2

5 Sept Suvla Bay Battalion relieved 6th Inniskilling Fusiliers and one company of 4th Cheshires at 17.00. 20.00 the remainder to 6th RDF took over the line from 31st Brigade from 105H between 6 and 9 to road 100 yards south of V in Sulajik. Relief completed 23.00. Casualties: Killed 2, Wounded 1

6 Sept Suvla Bay Fighting strength is 7 officers and 348 Other Ranks. The new line occupied by the Brigade is about 600 to 700 yards from the Turkish trenches which run along the north spur of Scimitar Hill. The summit of this hill is protected by barbed wire, and has a redoubt on it. Our line is similarly protected, but the wire is inadequite. Weather good, heat moderate, nights cold, flies very bad. Water from wells 300 yards behind our line. Brigade hold a line of 700 yards, held about equally by 6th Munsters and 6th RDF. Casualties: Killed 1, Missing 1, Hospital 2

7 Sept Suvla Bay All quiet. Working on improving trenches begun. . Casualties: Wounded 1, Missing 1, Hospital 4

8 Sept Suvla Bay Additional barbed wire placed in front of trenches about 30 yards out. Improvement of trenches and communications continue. Losses from snipers on the new line small. Health of troops better. An incomplete advanced trench on right of 6RDF was deepened and occupied. . Casualties: Wounded 1, Hospital 1

9 Sept Suvla Bay Reinforcements of 1 Corporal, 2 L/Cpl and 17 men arrive. The work of wiring the front continued and this consisted chiefly of barbed wire on wooden tressles placed by 85 Coy RE. Casualties: Wounded 2, Hospital 3

10 Sept Suvla Bay 05.30 A party of snipers dispersed by MG fire of 6 RDF. It is thought that snipers take up their position for the day at about dawn. Lines nearly covered with barbed wire during the night of 10/11 Sept. Casualties: Wounded 1.

11 Sept Suvla Bay Covering party of 6 RDF brought in 3 Turkish rifles and bayonets. Casualties: Killed 1.

12 Sept Suvla Bay 2nd Lt Oliphant, 2nd Lt Howe, 2nd Lt Clay joined and were taken on strength of the battalion. Divine service held in the trenches. Casualties: Hospital 5

13 Sept Suvla Bay Battalion relieved by 7th Royal Dublin Fusiliers and go to rest trenches at Ali Bay Chesme at 20.00. 2nd Lt Chambers and 2nd Lt Craig leave Battalion. Casualties: Hospital 4

14 Sept Suvla Bay The reserve trenches are no more than 400 yards from firing line. Very quiet along this section of line by both day and night. Casualties: Nil

15 Sept Suvla Bay Battalion in rest trenches. Nothing of interest happening. Strength of Battalion 8 officers and 362 Other Ranks. Heavy shower of rain in the morning. Casualties: Hospital 1

16 Sept Suvla Bay Improvement of trenches and communications continued. Sniping decreases, possibly because intermettent fire from our trenches is carried out. Casualties: Killed 1, Hospital 2

17 Sept Suvla Bay. Casualties: Killed 1, Wounded 1, Hospital 2

18 Sept Suvla Bay At 17.00 a heavy bombardment of our line from Sulajik to Jephson's Post on KTS Ridge was commenced. At 17.05 heavy rifle fare started all along the line named, and on our front and on our right. It could not be seen whether any attack was made on our line. All was quiet again at 17.30. At 21.30 an aeroplane was heard overhead going in a South westerly direction. Lt Couper RAMC left and Lt Paine RAMC is attached instead. Casualties: Hospital 2

19 Sept Suvla Bay Divine service held in the trenches. Casualties: Nil

20 Sept Suvla Bay The usual morning and evening bombardment took place. Work on trenches, communications and drainage continued. Casualties: Missing 1, Hospital 4

21 Sept Suvla Bay Strength 8 officers and 363 Other Ranks. The battalion moved up to the firing line at 19.15 to relieve 7th RDF. Capt W H Whyte rejoined from hospital. Casualties: Hospital 5

22 Sept Suvla Bay Battalion working on forward saps and improving parapets as far as possible, though sandbags are impossible to get. Casualties: Hospital 4

23 Sept Suvla Bay Work on saps and trenches as usual. Patrols report enemy working parties very heavy at night on Scimitar Hill. Sniping inconsiderable, our own working parties not interfered with. Casualties: Nil

24 Sept Suvla Bay Heavy bombardment of whole line. Casualties: Died 1, Missing 2 Hospital 2

25 Sept Suvla Bay Strength 11 officers and 473 Other Ranks. 2nd Lt J M Sinclair of 13th Scottish Rifles, 2nd Lt C W Clink 4th Scottish Rifles and 119 OR joined from 3rd Battalion. New advanced fire trench marked out and cut through during the night. Wiring party erected new entanglements in front of new line. Patrols of 6RDF were able to go out and collect rifles inclusing 4 Turkish rifles, ouyr rifles all Territorial. Casualties: Wounded 1, Hospital 2

26 Sept Suvla Bay During abnormally heavy shelling at 05.45, the Turks shouted "Allah, Allah" but no attack followed. During the past week the enemy have greatly added to the strength of their position on Scimitar Hill by putting down quantities of barbed wire and additional trenches. He does not open MG fire on our trenches, but is content with sniping sentries and lookout men are not as a rule fired at. Divine Service was held in the trenches by Canon MacLean (CE) and Father Murphy (RC). Casualties: Hospital 4

27 Sept Suvla Bay Strength 13 officers and 515 Other Ranks. 2nd Lt M G Corbat-Singleton rejoined from hospital. Lt G A Watt and 2nd Lt Turner and 50 men from 4th and 5th battalions joined. Naming of trenches started. Sanction given to "Dublin Road" and "Sackville Street". At 19.00 heavy firing was heard on our right and also some loud cheering. At 19.25 the rifle fire had spread along our front. Report by officer i/c covering party for our wire party who had just gone out, that a party of about 50 Turks with bombs supported by a strong firing party, had come towards our line and had thrown bombs at our party and into our wire. The attack was made by the enemy, but very hot fire was kept up from a distance of 300 yard. or possibly in places as close as 250 yards. Very ights were freely used, but not many Turks were seen. At 19.20 the enemy guns started shelling along our front, and also searching for reserves in the rear. They also sent up star shells. 19.25 message from Brigade that A Coy from 7th RDF had been sent to reinforce. 20.00 requests from 2 companies for ammunition: sent up all regimental reserve to firing lines. 28000 rounds. Asked Brigade to send up more for our reserve. Replied not unless very urgently needed. 20.15 OC Col Cox asked Brigade for 50 boxes at once. 20.20 Lt R B C Kennedy, MG officer, reported wounded in back of neck and shoulder by shrapnel. At 20.30 firing reported easier. At 20.50 everything quiet. Casualties: Killed 1, Wounded 11, Hospital 1

28 Sept Suvla Bay Casualties last night 1 killed, 13 wounded plus Lt Kennedy wounded.. A fresh forward fire trench completed and occupied by 6 RDF. The Turks showed greater activity, bombing parties came down and threw bombs at our wire and also try and cut it. Casualties: Wounded 2, Hospital 2

29 Sept Suvla Bay Our relief by 7th RDF cancelled about 2pm. No reason given. (Brigade report that it was canceled as an order had been received to move more of the Brigade to Lamnos} Casualties: Wounded 2, Missing 1

30 Sept Suvla Bay Orders received during the moring that all surplus stores and officers kits were ready to be taken to C Beach by 18.00. Accurate list of all ? stores to be made and copy sent to 30 Brigade HQ. The 5th Wiltshires were to relieve us and they sent CQMS to take over stores during the day. Relieving battalion did not arrive in our lines till 06.00 on 1st Oct. Casualties: Nil
