Edward Mannock (senior)

1856 Born London (from census, but not on GRO). The Census listed his parents as Michael Mannock (birthplace Dundee, Scotland) and Margaret (Riley) Mannock; (birthplace Perth, Scotland); they were married at Dublin, in St Patrick's Church,  on 10 March 1846

1879 Apr 17 Enlisted in 2nd Dragoons at Dundalk.. Claimed to be Edward Corringham, born 1858 in Grimsby, a clerk. Note that there actually a lot of Corringhams in the Grimsby area. I have not been able to establish his connection, if any, with them

1881 Census:  Margaret W Mannock (his mother) widow (59) born abt 1822 Scotland. Living at 6 Bardolph Rd, Islington, with son Michael widow (30) born abt 1851 Ireland. Commission Agent; daughter Christine (19) born abt 1862 London. And, living just a few doors away at 1 St Peter's Road - Julia Sullivan (22) born abt 1859 Ireland. General Servant.

1883 Feb 4. ,The date of the marriage in Ballincollig given on Edward Corringham (Mannock)'s service record. He married Julia Sullivan who appears to have been 15 at the time

His Military History Sheet lists the correct date of his marriage (4 February 1883) and it lists the following information for his two sons:

1887 Oct 21 Court Martialed at Brighton WO 86/36

1891 Mar 24. Discharged from the army. He was Edward Corringham on his army papers

1891 census in London

1892 May 31. He Re-enlisted as Edward Mannock. Gives his birthplace as Dublin. 5th Dragoon Guards

1893 Sep 6. His regiment was posted to India and he was there briefly but returned to the UK. His family appear to have remained in UK

1897 Sep 11. Posted to India, where his family is believed to have joined him in May 1898

1899 Oct 25. At the outbreak of the South African War the 5th dragoon guards were posted to South Africa, and Mannock's family, remaining in India, did not rejoin him until 1902, at Shorncliffe in Kent.

When serving in the Boer War he transferred from 5th Dragoon Guards to the Black Horse (7th Royal Dragoon Guards) in 1902 to continue to serve rather than return to India to his wife and children

1902 Apr 11. Returned to UK from South Africa.

1903 Nov 3. the next year, in Canterbury, he was discharged at the expiry of his service and at his own request. Within weeks he deserted the family, taking with him their meager savings. None of them saw him again.

1904 Jul 10. Married - St John's, Deptford

 1907 Jul/Sep. Their son Edward Lucius Mannock. Note that Michael Mannock, his father had a child by a later union called Lucius P Mannock b1857 (I cannot find birth reg, but in census)

1911 census Edward Mannock Aged 51, (Born Dublin) resident at 13 Invicta St, Blackheath, London SE; married for 6 years to Lottie, aged 37, (a Laundress working at home), with a 4 year old son, Edward Lucius. His occupation is given as 'Army Pensioner, Clerk 5th Bn Gds OCA

1919 Mick Mannock's MIC has details of his father claiming for his medals (and address of 29 Siebert Rd, Westcombe Park, Blackheath is given) in 1919; there is also a Tank Corp MIC (Cpl 306922) for a Patrick Mannock could this be the brother?

1920 Edward Mannock probably dies in Woolwich.: MANNOCK Edward, age 57, Woolwich 1d 1271. The age is slightly out but only one on English GRO
