Edward Mannock's life after 1914 has been well researched, but his life before 1914 has not been properly research. There are so many complicating pieces of information that it is difficult to find out where he was born.

1891 census with his parents in London "Edward aged 3 born Brighton, Sussex
The family were in India after their father's posting . During a stay in India, ‘Mick’, then ten years old, suffered an amoebic infestation which caused temporarily blindness. Eyesight problems were to dog him for the rest of his life.
1903 Seems to be the year that Edward Mannock senior abandoned his family. At this point Edward VC had to go out to work from about the age of 15
His education was at the Military School at Canterbury, he entered the service of the National Telephone Company. In 1913 he went to Turkey and was detained there as a prisoner for some time after the outbreak of the war.
